  The Cheka: Lenin’s Secret Police The Cheka, officially the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission (VChK), was established in December 1917 as the Bolshevik regime’s secret police tasked with defending the new government from internal threats and counter-revolutionaries. Formation and Leadership Lenin authorized the creation of the Cheka shortly after the October Revolution. Felix Dzerzhinsky was appointed its first head, given extensive powers to suppress political opposition, sabotage, and dissent without legal restraint. Role in the Red Terror The Cheka was the main agency responsible for the Red Terror, a campaign starting in 1918 aimed at eliminating enemies of the Bolshevik regime. It conducted arrests, executions, deportations, and censorship to consolidate Bolshevik power.
